Ogun state is in the southwestern Nigeria. Created in 1976, it borders Lagos State to the south, Oyo and Osun states to the North, Ondo to the east and the Republic of Benin to the West, Ogun State has about 10million population and expands up to Ikorodu, Shomolu, Epe, Ilupeju and Lekki in Lagos Nigeria.
Abeokuta is the capital city, notable towns in the state Includes Ijebu-Ode, Otta, Sagamu, Yewa, Reno, Ijebu-Igbo e.t.c.
As the election year draws nearer, political heavy weights have began permutation on how to clinch their party’s ticket to run for 2019 leading them to Oke Mosan top job.
Unlike in the previous years where it was easy for candidates to be anointed, the 2019 election pose to be different because of crisis in most of the parties.
For instance, the leading opposition party PDP has been broken into two, Sheriff’s faction who is fighting tooth and nail to remain the Supreme party chairman will produce candidates should court judgement favour him, Makarfi is also spoiling for war by establishing a factional party called APDA.
In APC, the incumbent governor of Ogun State, Mr Ibikunle Amosun will want to have his successor using all his connections to Buhari and Aso Rock, however, as the tradition of the party permits, National leader of the party Senator Bola Tinubu who is in control of most of the south-western state will want to drag the state to ensure that he install his loyalist to further consolidate his powers in the region.
Recall that Tinubu’s political fortune began to dwindle after he was unable to install his loyalist as Kogi and Ondo governor, so, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti and other states will be his next experiment.
Mr. Dimeji Bankole, a former house of representative speaker is one of the leading candidate according to the Information made available to WAILERSNG, he is a PDP member but likely to contest under the newly formed Mega Party, Action Democratic Party ADP, his father Chief Alani Bankole is reportedly the south west coordinator for the new party, clinching his guber ticket may be easier than when he will have to dig it with others in PDP.
Mr. Ladi Adebutu, the son of lotto businessman, Chief Adebutu Keshinton is also reported to be one of the key aspirant for Ogun top job, he is a PDP member but the faction he belongs to is unclear unlike Senator Buruji Kashamu alias Esho Jinadu who is in Sheriff’s faction.
Senator Adeola Yayi who is from Yewa Awori, a minority group in Ogun State, his people has never been elected as governor since the creation of Ogun State, this sentiment seems to be working for him but politics is a game of numbers, majority can always swing it their way anytime and every time.
Senator Adeola as widely speculated to be a candidate of Bola Tinubu but seems their is a cold war between the trio Amosun vs Yayi and Tinubu.
What many await to see is how Tinubu will outsmart Amosun in his state to snatch APC ticket in favor of Adeola Yayi is what still remains elusive.
Again, there are other strong candidates that are likely to emerge from other political parties.
Below are the names of some aspirants who have shown interest for governorship race in Ogun 2019.
Senator Solomon Adeola
Former Nigeria House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole.
Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi.
Two-time governorship candidate, Gboyega Isiaka.
Former House of Representatives member, Abiodun Akinlade.
Amosun’s Chief of Staff, Tolu Odebiyi.
Former lawmaker, Senator Lekan Mustapha.
Former governorship candidate of Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Otunba Rotimi Paseda.
Lawmaker representing Remo Federal Constituency, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu.
Frmer Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Olorunnibe Mamora.
Deputy Speaker, Remmy Hassan.
Senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly, Buruji Kashamu.
Three persons currently serving in Amosun’s cabinet are also said to be interested in the top job.
They are Ayo Olubori (senior consultant).
Kola Lawal ( Commissioner for Forestry).
Otunba Bimbo Ashiru (Commissioner for Commerce and Industry).
Prince Dapo Abiodun.
Chief Olajide Awosedo.
Incumbent chairman of Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, Mr Rotimi Rahman.

FG immortalises late Adebayo, names University after him
TheFederal University, Oye Ekiti, has been re-named Adeyinka Adebayo University, after the late military governor of the defunct Western Region.
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo made this known on Saturday at the funeral service held for the late elder statesman at All Saints Anglican Church, Iyin-Ekiti.
According to Osinbajo, the resolve to honour the late general was as a result of his exemplary leadership qualities and his astute belief in the peaceful existence of the country.
Osinbajo recalled how the late Adebayo’s technical advice to the then military government helped to put the federal troops ahead of the rebels during the civil war in 1966.
He said were it not for the bravery and exceptional military professionalism exhibited by Adebayo, Nigeria would probably not be a united nation today.
In his sermon preceding the burial, the Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Nicholas Okoh, said though the exit of Adebayo at 89 may be sad and unpleasant to many, death was a necessity that no mortal could avoid.
Okoh, who was represented by the Dean, Church of Nigeria and Archbishop of Ondo Province, George Lasebikan, said it was saddening that many Nigerians were desperate to acquire wealth at all cost.
He urged Nigerians to change their attitude to life and embrace humility and contentment for the nation to move forward.
Dignitaries at the burial service included governors of Ekiti, Ayo Fayose; Oyo, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi; Ogun, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun; Edo, Godwin Obaseki; and Ondo, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu.
Also present were former governor of Ekiti, Dr Kayode Fayemi, as well as his Edo and Ogun counterparts, Mr Adams Oshiomhole and Chief Gbenga Daniel respectively.
Also in attendance were former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae; retired Lt.-Gen. Alani Akinriade, retired Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, Amb. Bamidele Olumilua, retired Gen. David Jemibewon, Dr Chris Ngige, and Gen. Ike Nwachukwu.
The list also included business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige and Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, retired Gen. Zamani Lekwot, retired Col. Theophilus Bamigboye, Chief James Ibori, Chief Reuben Fasoranti and Chief Ayo Fasanmi were also there.
NAN reports that the remains of Adebayo were committed to mother earth at his private residence in Iyin Ekiti with full military honours.

Gov. Ambode commissions Abule Egba, Ajah Flyovers, Lekki Roads
Lagoswww.everrainblo.blogspot.com.ng
State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday commissioned the Ajah and Abule Egba Flyovers, saying that both bridges were creative solutions by his administration to address the perennial traffic associated with the areas, as well as boost economic activities in both axes.
The Governor, who spoke at separate events in Ajah and Abule Egba to official open the Bridges, christened as ‘Jubilee Bridges’ for public use, said that while the driving motive behind Ajah Bridge was to improve connectivity in the axis and facilitate economic growth, the Abule-Egba Bridge was about opening up other areas of the State and improving the lives of residents in the area.
Speaking at Ajah, the Governor recalled that the area was troubled with terrible traffic gridlock on a daily basis, which according to him was crippling business activities, causing loss of valuable man hours and revenues.
He said the Bridge would eliminate the traffic jam usually experienced on the road while the Freedom and Admiralty roads, which he also commissioned, would provide an alternative route to the Lekki/Ikoyi Bridge, thereby, easing traffic at Lekki Phase 1.
“We had to give this project priority because of its strategic importance to the economic growth of the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Ibeju-Lekki-Epe axis. This axis will play a key role in the future prosperity of Lagos State as the home to many multi-billion naira private investments in the Lekki Free Trade Zone as well as the upcoming seaport and airport.
“As a government, we are irrevocably committed to making Lagos State an investment haven and we have made it a duty to put in place top class infrastructure that will facilitate movement of people, goods and materials. We are confident that these initiatives will boost commercial activities in this axis, support economic growth and significantly reduce travel time as well as other costs associated with traffic challenges,” the Governor said.
Besides, Governor Ambode said that beyond the Bridge, his administration was already looking to activate the Badore jetty in line with efforts to commence reforms in the State’s water transportation efforts.
He said this intervention would see the creation of a bus route from Badore to Langbasa and Ajah axis, rehabilitation of the Badore Road and also create alternative routes through Oke-Ira to the Epe expressway, while the alternative slip road which motorists used while the construction of the Bridge lasted would be closed to accommodate a new Bus Terminal.
At the commissioning of Freedom Road and Admiralty Way in Lekki, Governor Ambode said in continuation of efforts to open the axis for economic activities, the State Government in partnership with the private sector would commence construction of 8km Regional Road to serve as alternative route to connect Victoria Garden City (VGC) from Freedom Road.
Governor Ambode, who also spoke at the commissioning of Abule Egba Bridge, said the project was a result of the Government’s engagements with the people of the axis and his administration’s strong desire to make life easier and better for the people.
He said the area was a strategic route for commercial and social activities which was riddled by heavy traffic gridlock, hence his administration’s decision to redesign the traffic flow chart of the axis to ensure better connectivity between Lagos and Ogun States.
“Today, we all have cause to rejoice as the Jubilee Bridge, Abule-Egba is delivered. This bridge is one of the interventions we embarked upon to ensure free flow of traffic, stimulate commercial activities and create opportunities for our people.
“Lagos means business and today, Abule-Egba is open for business. This bridge signposts the beginning of a new era of development that would enhance the standard of living of the people in this axis with the provision of this infrastructure,” Governor Ambode said.

JUST IN: Adeleke: Family threatens to sue LAUTECH CMD
The family of Senator Isiaka Adeleke, has vowed to sue the Chief Medical Director of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo , Prof. Akeem Lasisi, and other medical practitioners for alleged unprofessional conduct in handling the report of the autopsy ordered by the family into the death of the late senator.
The family led by Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, said this at a press conference in Ede on Wednesday while reacting to the testimony of the CMD, who appeared before the coroner, Mr. Olusegun Ayilara.
He said the family neither participated nor believed in the kangaroo inquest ordered by Governor Rauf Aregbsola, saying the CMD has refused to give the family the result of the autopsy carried out on the deceased despite that it was ready since May 5th.
He said, ” It is quite disheartening, that we live in a country where some of our supposed professionals can be so easily compromised by their paymasters without any regard to the oath they swore to as medical health practitioners. The family has also noted with interest the contradictory testimonies at the Coroner’s Inquest as to whether Senator Isiaka Adeleke had anything to eat at the last party he attended hosted by an Osun State APC chieftain.
The Adeleke family hereby puts it on record, that based on the high level of unprofessional conduct already displayed by CMD of LAUTECH, the integrity of the ‘Yet to be ready’ autopsy must have been seriously compromised.
” The Adeleke family is consulting layers and is considering all legal options available to address this unfortunate and unprofessional conduct exhibited by the medical practitioners in this matter.”

The campaign buses have the following inscriptions: “Support Continuity 2018, Fayose Wherever You Go, We Will Go”; “Ekiti 2018…Continuity, Fayose Leads, We Follow.”
Buses including 35-seater Toyota Urvan and 18-seater Toyota Hiace, otherwise known as Toyota Hummer bus are parked in the
premises of the Government House.
The buses which are painted lemon green are embossed with the picture of a smiling Fayose wearing black “danshiki” with red
embroidery and waving.
The non-appearance of the PDP name and logo are tell-tale signs that Fayose has made up his mind to quit the umbrella party.
But Fayose who hosted students and youths Wednesday evening at Government House grounds whose ages range between 18 and 22 emphasized that he won’t wait a day longer in the PDP if his faction loses the case at the Supreme Court.
Many of the students who were attracted to the Government House with the governor’s promise of giving the first 300 that arrived laptops went home disappointed when the promise was not fulfilled.
Fayose promised to organize a raffle draw to determine the laptop winners which did not go down well with the youths who
were eager to go home with their prizes.
Addressing the audience earlier, Fayose He also dropped a bombshell that stakeholders in the party loyal to Senator Ahmed Makarfi will defect to another party, if Senator Ali Modu Sheriff wins the appeal pending at the
apex court.
He did not mention the party they (Makarfi loyalists) would defect to in the event of a loss to Sheriff.
When asked whether he has the intention of leaving the PDP as being rumoured, Fayose stated that no law prohibited him from defecting if the PDP can’t be a veritable platform for him to advance his political frontiers in 2018.
Fayose said: “I am still a member of the PDP and still the Chairman of the PDP governor’s forum, there are no two sides to it.
“But the strategy for 2018 poll is strictly my own business. No law says I should not run on the platform of another party if the PDP is no longer a right direction depending on circumstances.
“If they are bent on destroying the PDP, let them go ahead but I will never have anything to do with Senator Sheriff. The party is like a vehicle and the vehicle can’t be more important than the driver.”

FESSU National meets Governor Fayose, Demands members Bursaries/Scholarship, among other students welfarism
www.everrainblog.blogspot.com.ngFederation Of Ekiti State Students Union (National Body) is the most powerful students association representing the general interest of all indigenous students of Ekiti State in higher citadels of learning across Nigeria and beyond. Our tentacles cuts across all the institution of learning in Nigeria and we've from time immemorial proven to be the uncompromising voice of the Ekiti Indigenous Students.
The National Leadership of Federation Of Ekiti State Students Union was on Monday 15th of May, 2017, in a meeting with the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose over issues bothering on Bursary/scholarship, power outage in students residential areas, harassment of Students by Operation Flush among other sundry issues ravaging the Union
.
The meeting which commenced about 12:15 noon and lasted for over five hours had the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olusola Eleka, Chairman, house committee on information, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Dr. Idowu Samuel Omotosho, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mrs Modupe Alade, The State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Olanrewaju Ogunsuyi and other high ranking Government functionaries in attendance
.
Speaking at the meeting, the National President of FESSU, Comrade Adewumi Idowu Peter (NOBLEMAN) appreciated the governor for, out of his busy schedule, magnanimously creating an avenue to interface with the Union and listened to the plight of her members, which is unarguably the first step to know the demands and proffer solutions to them.
.
Comrade Adewumi reminded the governor of an agreement he willingly entered with our predecessor on Friday 29th May 2016 to pay bursary and scholarship to all indigenous students of the State, which uptill now, he (Fayose) hasn't fulfilled. Adewumi therefore beseech the Governor to, in the interest of giving to the students their dividend of democracy and good governance, pay the emolument as soon as possible.
.
Other pertinent issues that were raised before the governor and seek immediate intervention was the total power outage ravaging the students residential areas (i.e, Ekiti State University, College of Health Science and Technology, Ekiti State School of Nursing) among other towns and villages in Ekiti State, The issue of the State Policemen and OPERATION FLUSH harassment of students were mentioned, frowned at and totally condemned, Former Students Leaders in the State who have graduated were lobbied to be given automatic employment by the Government while the Governor was beseeched to help in the quest to get a befitting Permanent Secretariat for the Union as well as Mobility so as to have a smooth running of the Union's administration
In his reactions, Governor Ayodele Fayose blamed the delay on the payment of the Bursary on the economic recession and the drastic reduction in the State Monthly Allocation, he however mandated his Deputy, Dr. Olusola Eleka, to liase with the Bursary/Scholarship Board and begin immediate actions on the process involved in the payment of the emolument once and for all, the Governor said the required information, data et al should be forwarded to his table as soon as possible for prompt action. He also declared his interest in assisting Ekiti students in securing a portion of land at the state capital, through the ministry of land and be developed as "Ekiti students' house"
.
Governor Fayose expressly registered his displeasure towards the plight of the Students and Ekiti residents in the power outage areas, saying there is little or nothing he can do since the Power Holding Company and by extension, the distributor, Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has become a private company. In the same vein, he frowned on the harassment of students by any Law Enforcement Agencies in the State, most especially the OPERATION FLUSH and advised students to also stay aloof of any criminal actions that could warrant harassment or arrest. Governor Fayose however promised to at his instance facilitate another meeting in the next four Weeks involving FESSU Leadership with the Management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and the Policemen/OPERATION FLUSH to harness ways to bring back light to the affected blackout ravaging towns in the State and to interface with the Law Enforcement Agencies on the Code Of Conduct vis-Ã -vis their area of jurisdictions
Conclusively, the Governor appreciated the students leaders for their understanding while pressing their demands and support in his mission to change the face of the State. He however advised those who haven't registered nor collect their Voter's Card to visit their Local Government INEC Secretariat so as to be part of the decision makers in the future election

Ooni of Ife remains leader of all Obas in Yoruba land – Secretary General, Council of Yoruba Obas blasts Olugbo of Ugbo
Ooni of Ife remains leader of all Obas in Yoruba land – Secretary General, Council of Yoruba Obas blasts Olugbo of Ugbo
The Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Akinruntan has been told to withdraw a statement where he was quoted as saying he is the leader of all Yoruba monarchs.
Reacting to the Oba’s claimed, the Secretary General, Council of Yoruba Obas, Oba Aderemi Adedapo maintained that the Ooni of Ife remains the number one king in Yoruba land. He was responding to questions from Punch on the matter.
Oba Adedapo, who is also the Olojudo of Ido Osun, said the Olugbo’s claim was untrue. He said no one could rewrite history of the Yorubaland in order to suit his purpose, adding that the Ooni of Ife remained the leader without any controversy.
Oba Adedapo, who is also the Coordinator, South-West Council of Traditional Rulers, said the late Ooni, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, was highly instrumental to Oba Akinruntan’s ascension to the throne.
He said, “Oba Akinruntan is an attention seeker. He is a rabble rouser, he deserves no response but some people especially outside the country may tend to believe his claim if he is not corrected.
“His utterance is part of royal rascality we are talking about. Does he want to rewrite history or what? Nobody can rewrite history. The late Ooni Sijuwade made it possible for him to become the Olugbo.
“He must withdraw that statement within the next 96 hours which is four days. What he is saying is abominable in Yorubaland.”
everrainblog.blogspot.com.ng The Ulogbo was described as a rabble rouser and an attention-seeking monarch, for declaring himself as the leader of all Yoruba Obas.

The controversy that trailed how the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu snubbed the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, led to a debate of who the leader of monarchs in Yoruba land is, the Olugbo of Ugbo land, Oba Obateru Akinruntan, has said he is the most prominent and leader of all the traditional leaders in Yoruba land, and the custodian of the authentic history of the race.
Speaking at an event organised to mark the 30th anniversary of Kola Olootu as a radio presenter in Ibadan on Sunday, the monarch, who is also the Chairman, Yoruba Obas Conflicts Resolution Committee, said he had published a book on the true history of Yoruba race, which placed the Olugbo above all other monarchs in Yoruba land.
According to him, he is on the verge of publishing the volume two of the book. The Olugbo said he was aware of some critics of his works and historical analysis, stressing that many of those who criticised his works were unhappy that the true position of their lineage was being put into proper place.
The Olugbo said, “I am the leader of all obas in Yoruba land. I speak with thunder in my mouth and I make bold to say so. No one is above me in Yoruba land in as much as it has been accepted that we are from Ife. I am the one that Oduduwa met at Ife. We are the husband of Moremi Ajasoro. Anyone who wants real Yoruba blessing should approach me. I am the one bestowed with the power.”
Asked which of the various historical accounts of Yoruba land was authentic since his own version was the latest in the series, the Olugbo said his account was most accurate.
The Oba said, “People should face the truth. My account of the history of Yoruba race is the most accurate and authentic. I have published a book on it already. Like I said, Oduduwa met my people in Ife. Don’t mind my critics who use Facebook to abuse me. The truth is that many of them are children of slaves.
“They don’t want the true story of their fathers to be told. Slaves don’t want history to be told. I am bold because I am not a son of a slave. My book is there. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has accepted the book as the authentic history of the Yoruba race. I am about to publish another book on the same subject.”

LASIEC seeks support of security agencies ahead July 22 council poll
The Chairman, Lagos State
Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips, has
appealed to security agencies in the state to collaborate with the Commission
in ensuring violence-free election before, during and after the July 22, 2017
elections into the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas of
the State. While speaking with the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr.
FataiOwoseni and his team, the Chairman promised that the Commission would
engage in regular discussions with security agencies on how to ensure peace and
security during the electoral process at the local government level of the
state. Hon. Justice Phillips revealed that the Commission had entered into
partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the
distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to enable every registered voter
collect his/her PVC before the elections so that more people could actively
participate in the elections. She added that the Commission had embarked on
sensitisation of the public through the mass media on the on-going distribution
of PVCs in the 245 Registration Area Centres of the state. She, therefore,
appealed to all eligible voters to take advantage of the opportunity to collect
their PVCs and show more interest and commitment towards the electoral process,
particularly at the local government level of the state. The Chairman also
pledged that the Commission would provide a level playing ground for all
political parties and their candidates, stressing, however, that politicians
must have confidence in the ability of the Commission to conduct free, fair and
credible elections into the 57 LGAs/LCDAs of the state. Also speaking at the
occasion, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, assured
the Commission of the support of the police towards ensuring hitch-free
elections, noting that this is part of the statutory functions of the police
that must be undertaken. Mr. Owoseni disclosed that it was because of this
reason that he held a meeting with the Chairmen and Secretaries of political
parties in the state as part of the efforts of the police to ensure
violence-free elections. He also informed the Chairman of the Commission that
his meeting with the political parties revealed that the decision of the
Commission to collect administrative fees from aspirants into the Local
Governments and Local Council Development Areas of the State was not favourably
disposed to by politicians. He, therefore, urged the two parties to resolve the
issue amicably. The Police Commissioner also revealed that he had directed
Divisional Police Officers in the state to engage with leaders of political
parties under their jurisdiction to ensure hitch-free elections. He also
disclosed that he would appoint an officer who would facilitate regular
interface between the Police and the Commission. Mr. Owoseni noted that as the
elections are around the corner, the Commission must start paying more
attention to public enlightenment and voter education, stressing that the more
enlightened the electorate are, the easier the task of the conduct of the
elections. He also urged media practitioners and reporters to be accurate,
modest and be careful in the use of language employed when reporting electoral
matters to avoid creating unnecessary tension and acrimony among the people,
adding that the press must also help the Commission in educating the electorate
on the electoral process. Also during the visit of the Commission to the
Commandants of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force at
the 9 Brigade, Ikeja, Hon. Justice Phillips appealed to the military to also
assist the Commission in ensuring security for the people to ensure the
successful conduct of the elections. The Chairman promised to forward copies of
the Notice of Election issued by the Commission to the military chiefs to
enable them plan adequately for areas of intervention and assistance to the
Commission. Responding, Brigadier- General Attu pledged that the military would
provide security back-up to secure election personnel and election materials to
ensure the successful conduct of the elections, adding that the military was
concerned about the menace of militancy and would do everything possible to
curb the negative development in the state. The military chiefs also requested
the Commission to provide them with relevant information on any flash points
and other areas requiring the special intervention of the military. The
Commission later visited the Director, Department of State Service, Mrs. B.
Adoki, at Shangisha, Magodo, Lagos where the Chairman also requested for
support towards ensuring adequate security to guarantee hitch-free elections
into the 57 LGAs/LCDAs of the State. On the entourage of the Chairman were
Chief ( Mrs. ) Toyin Ibrahim- Famakinwa, Mr. Olusegun Ayedun (both LASIEC
Commissioners ), Mr. NurudeenMabayoje Salami, Permanent Secretary of the
Commission and some senior officers of the Commission.
Minister advocates digitalization of indigenous languages
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, minister of
Information and Culture, has advocated the digitalization of indigenous
languages in order to avoid them going into extinction. Alhaji Mohammed made
this remark while speaking in Kaduna at the 2017 edition of the Annual Round
Table on Cultural Orientation (ARTCO), organised by National Institute for
Cultural Orientation (NICO), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of
Information and Culture, adding that languages should go digital on various
Internet platforms where youths and children are familiar with, so that they
could begin to pick up their mother tongue from such electronic devices. The
minister commended the NICO for its work in the promotion of Nigerian languages
over the years, and assured that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration
was committed to according Nigeria culture its pride of place in the
developmental agenda of the country. “We will leave no stone unturned to ensure
that our cherished cultural legacies and values are transmitted from one
generation to another. “The importance of indigenous language to national
development cannot be over-emphasized. Language is the soul of culture; it is
an indispensable tool for the promotion and preservation of culture. We cannot
be genuinely committed to the promotion of our culture without addressing the
serious issue of language endangerment and extinction. “There is no gainsaying the
fact that our indigenous languages are endangered and if urgent steps are not
taken, they will go into extinction in no distant future. “Situation reports
show that there is a remarkable decline in the usage of our indigenous
languages by our children and youths; many of them cannot read or write in
their mother tongue. “This is not surprising because, according to Nigerian
writer Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezigbo, indigenous languages have been labelled as
“vernacular’’ or “garbage’’ and as such, most African children in primary and
secondary schools are even punished for speaking their mother tongues. That
should never be the case. “It has been my desire since I assumed duties as
Honourable Minister to convene a strategic stakeholders’ meeting to underscore the
relevance of the indigenous language newspapers and to engineer a road map for
their sustenance in the face of formidable challenges. This explains why one of
my first assignments in office was to visit identifiable indigenous newspapers
like Alaroye, Iroyin Owuro, Rariya, Aminiya and Leadership Hausa. “The visits
convinced me, more than ever, that indigenous language newspapers have a vital
role to play in reviving the fortunes of our endangered languages, if their
potentials are maximized. “The way forward is to fashion out strategies to
address the problem. We must take urgent steps to encourage parents to ensure
that their children are taught our indigenous languages. The teaching and
learning of Nigerian indigenous languages as contained in the National Policy
in Education must be fully implemented. Various platforms, such as the
indigenous language newspapers, which promote the use of indigenous languages,
should be supported and sustained. “Beyond encouraging the teaching of
indigenous languages to young people, a critical catalyst remains the
engagement of young people via platforms popular with them. I am talking about,
for example, translating our incredible treasure trove of literature, brimming
with exciting classics such as The Lion and the Jewel, The Passport of Mallam
Illia and Things fall apart not only into indigenous languages but also by
adapting those classics into comics, graphic novels, TV shows as well as
animated and live action feature films. “These remain extremely popular media,
especially among those aged below 30 years and who form a massive 70% of the
population, where the storytelling is primed to excite, engage and enlighten.
Indeed, not only will this optimize access to the wondrous worlds and richly
realized characters teeming in these works, the exercise stands to reintroduce
the younger generation to the rich and remarkable mosaic that is Nigerian
culture, instill and inspire in them a strong bond with said culture as well as
facilitate a greater understanding of their cultural identity and place in the
world. “The role of the electronic media in disseminating, aggregating and
curating our indigenous languages cannot be overemphasized. There is serious
potential in the plethora of programmes on radio, television and on the web to
spread the comprehension, appreciation and adoption of indigenous languages.
“Still on the theme of electronically engaging the youth, it is imperative to
deploy digital tools in ensuring the survival of our indigenous languages.
Today, social media, YouTube, texting and specially developed applications for
use on mobile devices are being used to attract young people to learning
‘endangered languages’. “There are also websites and online forums where people
can interact and optimize their knowledge of those languages. Those solutions
are worth exploring seriously. An aggressive, digital approach to the
challenges of preserving our indigenous languages for posterity will definitely
yield great dividends especially among the youth” the minister said.
